Moto G (2nd Generation) starts receiving 5.0.2 (Lolipop)

Hot on the heels of the news that Lollipop will be coming soon to various Motorola 2013 and 2014 devices, it now seems that Android 5.0.2 Lollipop has started to roll out on some 2nd generation Moto G handsets.

A person's 2nd generation Moto G has received an update. Previously he was running 5.0.1 which was build 22.21.25, but now after the over-the-air update he is running Android 5.0.2, which is build 22.21.28.

The roll out of Android 5.0 Lollipop seems to have been quite slow. In my house we have a Nexus 7 (2012) and a first generation Moto G. Neither have received the update from Android 4.4.4 to Android 5.0.x.

The apparent slowness of the roll out could be to do with a huge memory leak in Android 5.0, which many users are saying causes big problems. According to comments left here on the Android Authority web site, some users aren’t having any issues at all, however some are being hit quite bad. coryisakson wrote, “I was wondering why Lollipop was closing apps and behaving badly. I was wishing I could go back to 4.4.4. That release was so much smoother.” While Oktar added, “I have to reboot my Nexus 5 every 4-5 days!!! It’s awful!!!”

Until now the only device to get Android 5.0.2 was the Nexus 7 (2012). All other devices were on Android 5.0.1. Let’s hope that the new Android 5.0.2 that is starting to roll out is smoother than 5.0.1!

Have you got a Motorola device? Any updates? Please let me know in the comments below.

What smartphones must have.

Smartphones must do better in five key areas -- starting with battery life.

1. Better battery life
Given how much we rely on smartphones to run our daily lives, every little bit of battery life helps. Unfortunately, improvements in battery life trail badly the overall technological leaps made by phone makers. While energy researchers toil away, it would behoove chip and screen makers to push power efficiency in their products over raw performance. (By the way, tablet makers, why don't we raise the bar here, too? I say 10-inch tablets need to deliver 12 -- not 10 -- hours of battery life.)

2.Paying for stuff
Apple Pay appears to have invigorated mobile payments since its October debut. iPhone users have adopted the technology quickly and raised the visibility of mobile payments for other consumers. Competing products Google Wallet and Softcard both reported surges in use after Apple Pay's debut. This is great news, but the industry needs to do better.

3. More resilience
Most phones break when dropped. Typically, the screen shatters on impact, resulting in a costly repair or replacement. Companies such as Corning are working on this. In fact, Corning recently showed off a new version of its Gorilla Glass product that is much less prone to breakage when dropped on concrete from waist height. I can't wait to see this technology reach phones.

4. Better security
The latest versions of Google Android and Apple iOS offer built-in encryption. They also offer PINs, passwords, face locks, fingerprint locks, and remote lock and wipe tools. These are all great, but phone makers and operating system providers need to go further, especially for business users. More need to follow in the footsteps of Blackphone, which offers end-to-end security for core communications apps, such as email and messaging.

5. Affordability
Smartphones are too expensive. The full retail price of many smartphones is $650 or more. A maxed out iPhone 6 Plus goes for nearly $1,000. Some smartphone vendors have figured out how to make quality products at somewhat lower price points (see Motorola). Although phone makers need to pay attention to their margins, surely they can conjure up high-end phones that don't break the bank for consumers and businesses alike. With any luck, 2015 will see 2014's best features trickle down from costly flagships to more affordable phones.

Top 5 Phones in 2015

1) HTC One M8

Dubbed the HTC One M8, HTC's update to the original One is a little more curved and slightly larger than its predecessor, due to the brand-new 5-inch, 1080p display, though that's still quite compact by today's standard. Under that aluminium unibody shell is a Qualcomm 801 processor, clocked at 2.3 GHz and 2GB RAM, plus there’s 16GB storage, though this can be expanded through micro SD up to a 128GB.

2) LG G3 - Spec hunter? Then you'll love LG's slick 2014 flagship. An update to the already impressive G2, the G3 ups the game in almost every area, with a Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM, wireless charging and a large 3,000mAh battery. But it's the, frankly rather large, phablet like 5.5-inch display that steals the show. Boasting a 2K resolution, this screen is amongst the best out there and displays pictures and video in near perfect quality. Another feature we love is the new laser tech on the 13MP snapper, which speeds up auto-focus and makes capturing shots much quicker.

3) Samsung Galaxy Note 4 - A big upgrade on the Galaxy Note 3, the fourth iteration of the original phablet ups the specs with a quad-HD display that boasts a PPI of 500, 16MP rear snapper with a host of OIS features and a 3.7 meg selfie cam packing a flurry of wide angle modes. The S-Pen has been improved too, with better sensitivity and the ability to select multiple items at once.

4) Moto X 2014 - Motorola’s new flagship is a fine creation. Wrapped in aluminium, it has a premium feel that escaped the original, plus it has been upgraded in almost every area. There’s a new Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM and a bigger, sharper 1080p HD 5-inch display. It doesn’t feel like a big device though, with slim sides and a curved back, it feels great in the hand. Optional wood or leather backs can be added, the battery is good for a day of moderate use and the snapper has been upgraded to 13-megapixels.

5) Google Nexus 5 -  If you love Android the way Google intended it, but don't really fancy spending £499 on the upcoming Nexus 6, the Nexus 5 is still a great phone, even if it is over a year old. Specs wise you'll find a vibrant 1080p, 5-inch display, Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM. 16GB or 32GB options are available for internal storage, though choose wisely as there's microSD expansion.

The 8MP camera is fine is daylight, but takes a turn for the worst when the conditions are less than ideal and the battery will probably just about get you though a day of use.

The best thing about the Nexus 5 is the 5.0 Lollipop update, which brings a load of new features and a completely refreshed overall design to the software.

What are Ultrapixels

What Is an UltraPixel?

Did you hear about the HTC one'"s  fancy new "UltraPixel Camera"? HTC touts the camera as an end to the "megapixel wars." UltraPixels! Revolution! And, yes, the technology sounds very promising, but, uh, wait a second, what is an UltraPixel anyway?

UltraPixel is a made up marketing word...

HTC's new phone only has a 4-megapixel camera, and that could lead people to think it's inferior to the (roughly) 8-megapixel cameras on competing phones like the Nokia Lumia 920 and iPhone 5. Indeed, huge megapixels counts have long been used to trick customers into thinking that one camera is more sophisticated than another. The solution? Rewrite the language? Or maybe just confuse people more with another meaningless term.

...meant to highlight that the HTC One's camera sensor has "big pixels"...

HTC really wants you to know that its megapixels are BIGGER than the megapixels on competing cameras. That's why they're so ULTRA, get it? Fewer pixels on an identical surface area means the pixels are bigger. Both the HTC One and Lumia 920 have a 1/3-inch sensor, but the 920 has 8.7-megapixels compared to the HTC One's 4MP. That's why the HTC One has larger 2-micrometers pixels whereas the 920 only has 1.4-micrometer pixels.

...which are theoretically better at capturing light than little pixels...

Size matters. Image sensors are covered in photodiodes that convert light into electricity, which is processed and recorded as data. Each pixel in your photo represents one photosite on the sensor.
When you take a picture, the camera's shutter flies open for a fraction of a second letting photons pour in. Bigger photosites can capture more photons, and thus, capture more data. The difference is especially pronounced in conditions where the light sucks.

...and could make the HTC One's camera a winner...

More data means more quality—to a point. You need enough pixels that you can view the image at a reasonable size on screens. Think about how ridiculous a 100 x 100 image would look on the HTC One's 1920 x 1080 screen. But then again, most cameras output photos way larger than what most people will ever need. The 4-megapixel camera on the HTC One outputs 2688 x 1520 images, and that's really dangerously small if you want to crop or edit your images at all, but HTC is gambling that it is good enough for most people. All you're doing is uploading photos to Facebook and Instagram anyway, right?

Image Stabilization

What is Image stabilization ??

Image stabilization (IS) is a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera or other imaging device during exposure. Generally, it compensates for pan and tilt (angular movement, equivalent to yaw and pitch) of the imaging device, although electronic image stabilization can also be used to compensate for rotation. It is used in image-stabilized binocularsstill and video cameras, astronomical telescopes, and also smartphones, mainly the high-end. With still cameras, camera shake is particularly problematic at slow shutter speeds or with long focal length (telephoto or zoom) lenses. With video cameras, camera shake causes visible frame-to-frame jitter in the recorded video.

A comparison of close-up photographs of a keypad with and without optical image stabilization.

Digital Image Stabilization

Real-time digital image stabilization—also called electronic image stabilization (EIS) -- is used in some video cameras. This technique shifts the electronic image from frame to frame of video, enough to counteract the motion.
Some still camera manufacturers marketed their cameras as having "digital image stabilization", when they really only had a high-sensitivity mode giving a short exposure time, resulting in pictures with less motion blur, but more noise .
Click this link, to make this concept clear .

Stabilizing The Camera Body

A technique that requires no additional capabilities of any camera body–lens combination consists of stabilizing the entire camera body externally rather than using an internal method. This is achieved by attaching a gyroscope to the camera body, usually utilizing the camera's built-in tripod mount. This allows the external gyro to stabilize the camera, and is typically employed in photography from a moving vehicle, when a lens or camera offering another type of image stabilization is not available.
